The Goodwill on 3rd Street really feels automotive-related to me.
I'll see if I can find out any details on these this weekend.

Re: NEW: Altoona, 1925-2020
There were briefly (in 1941) Streamline Markets in Altoona and Hollidaysburg, which I'm assuming were the same Streamline chain that was Thorofare's predecessor, but I'm not sure about that. Thorofare was in Johnstown but maybe that's as far east as they got.

NEW: Altoona, 1925-2020
Altoona turned out to be more interesting and more time-consuming than I expected, with all the small service stores in evidence eceb into the early 1960s. A&P kept a counter-service store open until 1956, even (see attached). Anyway, enjoy: https://www.groceteria.com/place/pennsylvania/altoona/...

Re: I made a list of A&P locations... And I need your help with it
A worthy goal and I'm sure there are several thousand locations you could pull just from my lists here on this site. Keep in mind, though, that at its peak in the 1930s, A&P had over 15,000 locations in the US alone. To include every location that ever existed would probably be in the range of 2...

Re: NEW: Johnstown PA 1925-1960
Interesting Acme background. Thanks.
It’s also noteworthy that A&P took great advantage of its tendency toward really short lease terms (with options) in the 1930s and 1940s in Johnstown. I’m working on Altoona now, and their locations there during the same period were much more stable.

NEW: Johnstown PA 1925-1960
While it's fresh in my mind following my visit earlier this week. I hope to add later locations before too long. And nearby Altoona is next:

Re: New location list: Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge
The three Food Basics stores snuck in as Super Fresh stores, not using A&P in the name like they did in most other Ontario listings. Listings now reflect that, and thanks for the reminder!

Re: New location list: Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge
The lack of history for the Food Basics stores is something I’m going to go back and look at (I meant to do it before posting). That said none of the “usual suspects“ that tend to be predecessors (A&P, Dominion, Miracle Food Mart) seem to have been present in the later years. There are also no M...

And now Kitchener and Waterloo are updated too, with 1970-1995 "holes" filled in and also listings added for 2001-2022:

Re: What was this originally? (San Bernardino)
Housed two local chains starting about 1952: originally Owen's Market (and yes, the apostrophe is where it's supposed to be) and Pix Markets (early 1960s). It was a furniture store and a paint store after that and had numerous other grocery and non-grocery tenants. (All per newspaper archives,)

You might want to check that link. It goes to a Google spreadsheet (that requires access permission) rather than a Street View.

Re: Former grocery store / supermarket? (Twin Falls)
Almost certainly a Safeway based on the faux stone and the identical features on each side that would have held a "Circle-S" Safeway logo. But I have no data to support this.

Re: New location list: Guelph ON, 1938-1980
Updated Guelph tonight to add some early locations and to fill in some holes from the 1970-1995 years the Vernon directories treated so badly all over Southern Ontario.
