Re: NEW: Jacksonville, 1925-2020

I believe you are correct. Food Fair came in by purchasing Setzer's. Colonial (one of my pet chains) appears to have come in by acquiring Jacksonville (a/k/a Jax) Meat Company, and apparently did better in Jacksonville than anywhere else in Florida. There are actually a couple of stores (934 Dunn an...

Sneak Preview: Houston, 1925-1982

Unfortunately, the dates for which I currently have data end right before things got really interesting in Houston, with Safeway's acquisition of Weingarten's and subsequent exit from the market, etc. But even pre-1982 was still pretty interesting. More tweaks, notes, and commentary to follow: https...

Re: New location list: San Mateo County

I've seen this video before and it's great. A lot of these stores are in San Francisco proper rather than San Mateo County. 3:09 The White Front may be the 16th Street/Potrero location in San Francisco (now a Safeway and an attached shopping center) but I can't tell for sure. 12:30 Mayfair is defini...

Re: NEW: Des Moines, 1925-2020 (sort of)

This Newspapers.com newspage mentions how the Food Saver stores were bought and remodeled by Super One (Miner Inc.) in 1995, and indicates that the stores were closed during the remodeling process. Interesting chain and an interesting acquisition for Albertsons. Linking back to your earlier thread ...

Walrus article

A good overview of supermarket history and an examination of current trends (and I'm not just saying that because I'm quoted in the article):

Re: NEW: Des Moines, 1925-2020 (sort of)

313 Grand Avenue doesn't fit into the Pylon or Marina orders, and it also looks improbably big by 1950s Safeway standards...so was it rebuilt? The site is currently home to a Fareway supermarket, which is a name that sounds as if it were tailor-made for Safeway conversions. Des Moines' Merle Hay Ma...

There's a big gap (that will be filled soon) between 2000 and 2020:

Re: Madison, Wisconsin chain grocery/supermarket history

My best guess is that National relocated from the north-side (Dorn Hardware) building to the south side of the highway when it adopted the Del Farm banner in the 1960s. Historic Aerials shows a shopping centre appearing on that side of the intersection between 1957 and 1969, behind where the Univer...

At the risk of stepping on to Andrew T's turf, I have filled in some of the missing years for Madison with data from my my last trip to Fort Wayne, where all the city directories live:

Can anyone clarify whether all the Falley's stores operated under one name or whether some were Falley's, some were Food 4 Less, etc.?
