I think a lot of chains also had "consumer advocate" positions filled my recognizable individuals. I remember reading about the one who used to be at Giant Foods recently. Lucky Stores also had a female spokesperson in the 1990s, but I don't think she was associated with any specific brand...

Does anyone know the relationship between Skaggs Cash Stores and Skaggs United Stores? In the Sacramento section on this site it mentions Skaggs Cash as the Safeway predecessor, but the ASC version has it as Skaggs United. Were these chains merged together at some point? I'm pretty sure they were j...

Re: Safeway Europe and Australia store brands

From the following link, it looks like the "s" went away for good about 1990 in the UK:

I doubt this is relevant, but the only Uni-Mart I know is a Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain that's pretty inferior to most Mid-Atlantic offerings these days. I doubt there was any connection. Separate chain, alas. Per their website, they started operations about ten years after the movie...

This is from the Price Chopper website - if you check the paragraph with the >>>> it sounds like an early Super Center (and more like the antique shop) - It appears to have been only in that one store, as far as I can see from the site and it doesn't say how long it existed. That wasn't entirely un...

Big Bear in San Diego

Anyone know about the disposition of the Big Bear chain in San Diego (which was unrealated to the chains of the same name in Seattle, Ohio, and North Carolina)? I'm told that some became warehouse stores and were ultimately branded Food4Less, but was the chain sold as a whole or piecemeal. If it was...

From way back when, I remember it being a slice of bread done in red, with More Value (acutally I think Terry is right, it was Mor-Value at one time) written inside of it instead of HT. That's exactly what I'm thinking. I'm remembering the Harris-Teeter name spelled out (in the font used for the lo...

Unimart in Los Angeles?

In the 1965 movie "A Patch of Blue" there's a fairly long scene in a supermarket. I noticed the Unimart name on one of the signs. I'm not familiar with this chain, really, but what I've read suggests that they were big stores, maybe with general merchandise as well as food. This would be c...

Safeway in Magnum PI Episode

It was mentioned here a while back that a Safeway episode somewhere in Hawaii figured prominently in a 1987 episode of Magnum PI. I finally caught that episode and did lots of video captures, a couple of which are below. Anyone know which store this might be? I assume it's on Oahu, but I don't reall...

Should be very simple. All you need to do is hit the main library and ask to see the Polk directories from about 1970-1975. You can look up the address (any address in town, actually) to see what was there. Just out of curiosity, is this the same store? I remember shooting this two or three years ag...

The logo for More Value has always been (at least to my knowledge), the current Harris Teeter Logo, without other HT marks, rendered in red. They used to, at least when I worked there in the 90's, have yellow packaging. But the logo in the 1970s was different from the current version (you still see...

Photo below, assembled from A9 shots. I'd say a Safeway was not out of the question, but I'm definitely not 100% certain:

Yer Humble Host to the rescue. The aerial shot is from Terraserver and the front shot is from A9. It's amazing how I can visit an intersection in LA without leaving my desktop in Charlotte, isn't it? Brooklyn Avenue is now called Cesar E. Chavez Avenue, which is why it took me a while. The address i...

It seems like I remember something called American Fare (or Fair ...along those lines) in the early 80's. It was a large super store which was rumored to be a K-mart experiment. I think I remember one on Stone Mountain Expressway outside Atlanta. Any ideas?? Kmart's first few "hypermarkets', o...
