Re: Albertsons Lawn and Garden Centers

Super S, I am about 99% positive that the Eagle Road Albertsons opened with a garden center right around the turn of the century. I am about 99% positive that I read that it was the first Albertsons with a garden center.

Re: Smith's Store architecture in the 80's

RE Smith's in Idaho, the Idaho Falls store definitely had the open-air front door. The Pocatello one probably also did. That store closed when Fred Meyer opened a supercenter across the street (the new Fred Meyer replaced the former Grand Central, which didn't have a grocery department). RE Safeway ...

Re: Smith's Store architecture in the 80's

We moved to Vancouver in summer 2011 and shopped at the 136th and Mill Plain Safeway frequently until we moved again this year. Before we arrived, it received a lifestyle remodel and the open air front door is gone. I had wondered about that store's heritage. It just seemed slightly different from a...

Re: What to look for in Portland?

Super S -- I'm pretty sure there was a deli, but I can't remember for sure. I'll update once I make it back down there. I didn't have a chance to explore very much, but it was a really interesting store.

Re: What to look for in Portland?

And here are pictures of the 8145 SW Barbur Blvd Safeway in Portland. This is just down the street from a Fred Meyer that is closed temporarily pending a major face-lift. I am not familiar with exactly what is happening with this Fred Meyer (the Burlingame Freddy's) but it looked like the building h...

Re: What to look for in Portland?

Pictures of the 82nd Street Safeway. This was a great find. The deli was in the front-left section of the store, under a low ceiling, and in a kiosk-type of area that was on the floor, not set against one of the walls. Dairy products were in the back-left area of the store, also under a low ceiling....

What to look for in Portland?

Hello, I just relocated to the Portland area and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on can't-miss old stores for me to check out. My favorite so far is the Lake Oswego Safeway. It is a Marina store that has a lifestyle remodel. It is easily the classiest Marina store I have ever seen. The n...

Re: last new-build Safeway in Southern Idaho?

I remember when Albertsons was remodeling the Caldwell store (the one closest to Albertson College of Idaho), a section of the old Safeway wall graphics was uncovered. It had large pictures of grocery products and one of them was "Lucerne". That suggests early 80s and, based on my guess ab...

Re: Northwest Safeways

Ben, yup, that's the one.

I remember my cousins saying they hated the gable store because it was so small. I'm sure that's not a concern with the new one ...

Re: Northwest Safeways

Ben, you're close. Safeway built a new store to replace that little store in Astoria, but it was in the early 2000s. I shopped at the gable store while visiting some cousins, probably in 2003 but possibly 2002. I think the new store was already under construction at that point.

Re: last new-build Safeway in Southern Idaho?

The Caldwell store (now Albertsons, the one near Albertson College of Idaho) and the Pocatello store (now WinCo, next to Rite Aid) would be my first guesses.

There's a store in Weiser that became Ridley's that I would bet money used to be a Safeway that is also a contender.

Re: Any NON-FOOD Fred Meyer stores still operating?

The Idaho Falls Fred Meyer / former Grand Central closed in the late 1990s when a new Fred Meyer was built very close by. The Pocatello Fred Meyer / former Grand Central closed a few years ago when, again, a new Fred Meyer was built very close by. Both were in shopping centers with Albertsons stores...

Re: Boise ID

That Paul's store, as I recall, opened about five years ago. My memories are very foggy, but I believe that was originally a Buttrey location. I vaguely recall seeing an IGA SuperCenter sign (or some other independent, but I'm fairly sure it was IGA) on that building around 2001, but the store was v...

Re: Boise ID

You are correct, the Emmett and Baker City stores have their original interior (unless they were remodeled in the past four years). They were built in the early 2000s, both as replacement stores. It's sad to see some of those late 1990s white wall/hanging fixture stores get remodeled. That was one o...

Re: Boise ID

The Idaho Falls Albertsons stores are generally in good shape. Two have the new SuperValu interior; the other got a fairly light remodel a few years ago. The Idaho Falls Smith's got a remodel from the interior that you saw in Burley several years ago. It's not great but not horrible. The Idaho Falls...
