Re: Safeway, Charlottesville, 1972

I think the Kroger at Barrocks Road is actually on the old Super Fresh site. I believe the Safeway was on the south end of the center (closest to the college) where Old Navy is now. Yesterday I was in Charlottesville and got a quick look and from the side you can see where the building has been buil...

Re: Fredericksburg, Virginia

By 1985 the A&P had been converted to Super Fresh, it lasted until 1987-88 before closing. At the other end of the center was the K-Mart, it closed about the same time and moved west on Route 3 to a new center anchored by a new Giant. Across the street in the Westwood Center was a late 70s/early...

Re: Fredericksburg, Virginia

Actually Safeway has been gone from Fredericksburg since the 90s. The nearest Safeways are in Culpeper and Woodbridge. Since the sale of Ukrops, the Fredericksburg store was closed (on 1/31) because it was not part of the sale. This store was rumored to be closing for some time but I think the Giant...

Re: What were these two independent stores?

I don't know the full history of the store in Falls Church but I do know that it was a Grand Union at one time. When Grand Union pulled out of the DC market back in the 80s this store was one of four purchased by a group of former employees (I heard they were former managers).

Re: Mystery Safeway interior decor - Richmond, VA

I was working for Safeway in the old Richmond Division when this store opened in 1979. It originally had the more traditional 1970s decor mentioned in another post in this stream. It may have been remodeled but I don't think so, I believe this store may have operated as The Grocery Store (a Farm Fre...

Re: Acme in Virginia

Acme had a minimal presenses in Virginia. In the 1960s there was an Acme store about three miles from my home outside Alexandria. It was built in the early to mid 1960s and closed in the 70s. The building is still standing but has been sub-divided into four small store fronts.
