Re: Thriftimart Locations
In the early 1960s, a Thriftimart grocery store (with the huge red neon 'T' on the roof) opened in a new shopping center located at 6350 Van Buren Blvd. in the Arlington area of Riverside, CA. The center also included a Thrifty Drug (w/ adjoining coffee shop), W.T. Grant and Security Pacific Nation...

Re: Mervyns
The Riverside, CA store across from the Galleria at Tyler mall is now a Kohl's. It opened in September 2010. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5060/5500136151_fb67b3cc21.jpg The building originally opened in 1972 as The Treasury. Mervyn's and Target took over the building in 1983, with Mervyn's closing...

Re: Treasury Department Stores
What is also amazing is the size of the original building. If it was large enough to divide into a Mervyn's AND a Target. Wonder if the site rivaled the size of today's Walmart Supercenters? Yes, it is large (the building seen below at top left): http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3421/3760505832_20064...

Re: Treasury Department Stores
Thanks for the shot! What was throwing me off was I clearly don't remember The Treasury front as a Mervyn's. As the further shots mentioned, Mervyn's had a "false front" over The Treasury's. Let's see if Kohl's returns to The Treasury's...or eliminates it for good! Yes, we should have bet...

Re: Treasury Department Stores
Spotted this uncovered "squiggly roof" from the former Riverside, CA location for 'The Treasury' (which was most recently a Mervyn's): http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3403/4609317053_901bbccd34.jpg The Riverside location (3520 Tyler St.) opened around 1972 and closed in 1982 or early 1983. ...

San Bernardino - Inland Center Mall, former Gottschalks
Originally opened as May Co. in 1966, but closed in 1993 upon the merger with J.W. Robinson's at which time the building was sold to Gottschalks (1993/94-2009).

Re: Former White Front stores
I read in a Wikipedia entry that the Orange Show store still had the White Front arch. I used to go to that store a lot in college but I don't remember the arch but I wasn't paying attention to that kind of thing at the time. Is there still an arch there? The arch is long gone, but the pylon sign r...

Re: Montgomery Ward Locations-Southern California-1960s & '70s
When did Wards enter the Riverside Plaza? I know that the WT Grants opened after 1957 and it became Wards thereafter. But when? The location was torn down (with the rest of Riverside Plaza minus Harris') when the Plaza was redeveloped a few years ago into a small "lifestyle" center. Prior...

Re: Kids R Us
The Riverside Kids R Us was located at 10481 Magnolia Ave., just west of Tyler Street (and the Galleria at Tyler). It took up about 1/3 of the space within a former Gemco (the rest being a Lucky's supermarket, post-Gemco). As part of the remodel for KRU, it contained the long, oval window that Dean...

Re: Which chain once occupied these identical buildings?
I was wondering if the Coco's across from the Plaza once had a Reuben's in the basement.. I used to eat at the location a lot when my grandfather worked down the street. ... From the Jan. 20, 1970 edition of the Riverside Press-Enterprise newspaper regarding the then newly-opened Reuben's at 3640 C...

Here's a street view of a Coco's in Riverside (across form the Riverside Plaza) that also once had the "basement" Reubens (the stairs "down" are still readily visible out front): http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=33.953526,-117.392481&spn=0,359.9972&t=h...
