Re: Kroger Family Centers

I think I might have stumbled across a former Kroger Family Center in Valparaiso, IN Here's a Google Street View of the building before it was demolished: https://www.google.com/maps/place/1301+E+Lincolnway,+Valparaiso,+IN+46383/@41.4678596,-87.0448743,3a,26.4y,3.66h,91t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sJJV4EqV...

Re: Lafayette, LA

Further work was done in 2016 to remove the liquor store and move a few more things around. From a 2017 Street View, it still looks from the outside just as it did in 2015, the liquor store (complete with "Liquor" signage and separate doors) is still there, with even the LLC-era "Alb...

Re: Baton Rouge supermarkets

The Albertsons at Florida and S Sherwood was originally Skaggs Albertsons (never “Alpha Beta”) Skaggs and Albertsons split the stores 50/50, with some becoming Skaggs Alpha Beta (largely in Texas) and some becoming Albertsons (Louisiana and Florida). It's a shame that one sits empty, as it's in a b...

Re: Lafayette, LA

2863 Ambassador Caffery had to have been renovated before 2016...it had the "Albertsons Market" signage on the aisle markers when I visited in 2015, indicated it might have been renovated prior to the buyback of NAI. https://safewayalbertsonstexas.blogspot ... te-la.html Further work was ...

Big Chain ad from 1940

Seems that Big Chain in Shreveport was pretty snippy back in 1940 when United Gas came to town from Houston. bcad.jpg Funny thing is that two of those competitors ended up in Shreveport later on...Weingarten came to town in 1957, and Henke and Pillot (via Kroger by that time) came a little later on ...

Re: Lafayette, LA

I have a bit of a preview here. This spreadsheet covers locations of all the chains that have operated in Lafayette since 1955. There may be corrections later depending on what else I find. All I can say is that Lafayette is a very interesting place. Narrative of all of this to come. https://1drv.ms...

Lafayette, LA

So I'm finally (late) jumping into the game. I've acquired a subscription to Newspapers.com (until my wife finds out!) and have been playing around in the newspapers of a couple of places I've lived, including my current town, Lafayette. Lafayette is one of the most interesting in supermarket histor...

Re: Texas Updates

The other part of Food Lion's problems even before that was that H-E-B started building in Houston first, hitting fast and hard. As a result (that and the ABC special), only a dozen stores in Houston ever opened, and pulled around 1994. And the irony of the Houston portion of this story (they got m...

Re: Texas Updates

Did a little more checking. Food Lion entered Texas in 1991-1992 and had closed many of the stores by early 1994. The gave up on the entire state a couple of years later, so their entrance and exit all happened during my "missing" years in the 1990s (I was not able to get data for 1995). ...

Re: Kmart Food stores that lingered beyond the mid-'70s

Danville, IL, #4030, originally opened in 1963. The store was built in a very strange L formation. I'm assuming that it was operated by Kroger, because that's what it became. The store's sign was at the top of the hill on N. Vermilion St., and I remember vividly the Kmart Plaza sign, and the Kroger ...

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)

I remember finding out that 1710 11th Street in Huntsville, TX was originally a Kmart (later a Hastings for years, ultimately demolished for an H-E-B) but I can no longer find the reference. Looking at both Google Maps (for historic street images) and Historic Aerials (for historic maps), you may b...

Re: New Uses for Grocery Stores

The Safeway that now is a Planet Fitness in Abilene is next door to (actually is directly attached to) another retail relic of the past: one of the relatively few Drug Emporium stores which is still open despite that chain's bankruptcy and near-extinction back in 2003. I'm not exactly sure why the ...

Re: Safeway 639 Port Angeles Lincoln Street

The original Lincoln Street Safeway in Port Angeles WA opened as a Marina style in the 1960's, this store included the popular "Snack Bar" that were found in many Marina style stores of the 60's, this store in particular was a high profit store from opening and always a apple in the eye o...

Re: Thoughts for the new year

As I have told you many times over the years, we all appreciate what you have done for this hobby in general. Of course, all things have to evolve, and I believe your site does so very well, and always seamlessly. I know I've learned much here as have countless others. So I won't say 'dont' change a...
