Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area
Any predictions whether Giant-Carlisle (PA) will further incorporate the fruit slice logo into their stores (bags, store signage)?

Re: Walmart in-store restaurants
For the record, McDonald's contract with Walmart was terminated late last year (don't remember by which side), and little by little they are vacating their location in the stores.

Kmart--automatic doors?
Anyone know around what year they started incorporating automatic doors into their 'new' store openings (be it built new or just recycling another retailer's building that didn't have them to begin with)? I know they were by the time they revamped stores into the early 1990s model (red/white with th...

Re:
Great pics, turbo. Pretty scary looking place actually, with the huge empty lot and gray skies! Wish I could decipher what it used to say on that sign, but my connect-the-dots skills have slipped... Thanks! I came across a site with some historical Suffolk County newspapers. Unfortunately, still ra...

Re: More central PA Acme stores?
According to the list I was given the Elizabethtown Acme was at 1571 S. Market St; it opened in 1959. That would mean it's now the CVS, which was a former Rea & Derick. It's possible the R&D relocated into the Acme spot from next door, or just opened a brand new store (R&D was sold to P...

Re: More central PA Acme stores?
I'm wondering if the Elizabethtown store is the current Giant (former Jubilee, which was a former Kmart). Doesn't seem to be many places in the borough large enough where Acme could've set up shop and in addition the timelime of when Acme bailed out of the region and the (original) Kmart opened in t...

Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area
Looks to be some more moves going on by corporate...more fruit slice-logoed stuff showing up at Giant-PA, and now the layout of the circulars at Giant-MD and Giant-PA are very similar to each other.

Re: Central PA questions
I'm still trying to figure out the original makeup of the East Towne Mall in Lancaster. Unfortunately what there is of the Lancaster Intelligencer archives is paid, save for short summaries, so that's not much help. We know Kmart was Grant City originally, confirmed there was a store called Maxwells...

Re: Some Central PA Pictures
Apparently there was a Grant City store at the Lincoln Way Shopping Center (according to the Gettysburg newspaper archives on Google). Also interesting to note that A&P (in namesake) stuck around until at least 1986 in parts of the area. Figured most of the stores had changed over to Superfresh ...

Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area
What i think will happen is they will replace the generic "Giant" logo (the one based on the old Finast logo) with the Giant [PA] logo for the products sold at Giant [PA] and Martin's, and use the "fruit slice" logo for Giant [MD] and Stop & Shop Now some of the eggs (carton...

Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area
on some items, the MD-Giant/Stop N Shop version is seeping through, creating one uniform brand for all Ahold stores. I've actually seen some Stop N Shop labeled items show up at Giant (PA)...dunno if those are a mistake or intentional. edit: today saw a display of corn flakes with both Giant-PA and...

Re: Some Central PA Pictures
That TSC in Carlisle was indeed an A&P (and Superfresh later) Wow! When did Super Fresh leave Carlisle? Couldn't give an exact date but I think they were gone by the mid 90s. I moved here in '95 and the store was gone the first time I traveled to the Carlisle area. The only three left in the re...

Re: What exactly is (was?) a Pathmark "Super Center"?
Those were the larger stores that had appliances, pharmacies, and whatnot. The early Pathmark stores (many of which were rebranded Shop-Rite stores) didn't have the space for the extras.

Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area
I think you may mean that Ahold was looking to buy Pathmark, and that was around 2000. The deal fell through because of antitrust. Nope, Ahold was going to buy Acme...go through the Philly news archives from around 1989-1990 and you'll find it (well, the snippet, unless you pay for the whole thing)...
