Re: the BROADWAY

The Broadway at the Hawthorne Plaza is one of the few remaining Broadway stores that have yet to be re-used or demolished. Here is the view from the mall's main street entrance (still maintains the original signage lettering after all these years!) http://farm1.static.flickr.com/27/90066271_356e2278...

Re: Montgomery Ward Locations-Southern California-1960s & '70s

Heck I'd love to go if you set something up! As long as we can take pictures for a "location scout"/ The phone number to call to set up your "location scout" of the Hawthorne Plaza is: [contact author of post offline for this] When I went (back in June 2009) they would only open...

Re: Montgomery Ward Locations-Southern California-1960s & '70s

Wow that's incredible. How did you get into the old Hawthorne Plaza? I've been wanting to go in and look at it. Hows the interior of the old Broadway and JCPenney stores holding out? Jeff, Hi Jeff! A real estate investment company currently owns the mall and makes money on the side by using the for...

Re: Montgomery Ward Locations-Southern California-1960s & '70s

Probably the most interesting re-use of a Montgomery Wards was the former store at the now abandoned Hawthorne Plaza (Hawthorne, California). The entire department store has been gutted and transferred into government offices for the City of Hawthorne. While visiting the mall a few months ago I took...

Re: Vons stores with old interiors

Just by chance my buddy and I stopped by a Vons on our way to Lake Los Angeles (no, there's no lake there but that's another story...) and stumbled upon another location with an old interior. This store is in Palmdale (off E. Palmdale Ave.) and was built in 1984. The signage design and wall fixtures...

Re: Vons stores with old interiors

The following are photographs of pictures taken at a Vons on W. Ocean Ave in Lompoc, CA. It opened originally as a William Bros Market (a local Central Coast grocery chain) sometime in the early 1960s(?). I don't know the precise date, but Vons acquired many stores from William Bros sometime in the ...

Re: PayLess Drug Stores

The San Juan Capistrano CA location @ 11890 Plaza Drive was converted to Rite Aid. Still has the pharmacy in the front left side. Site received a complete Rite Aid remodel. Yet, NO Thrifty Ice Cream scooped on site! When recently there...I asked if I was missing it somewhere in the store! They refe...

Re: Kids R Us

The Riverside Kids R Us was located at 10481 Magnolia Ave., just west of Tyler Street (and the Galleria at Tyler). It took up about 1/3 of the space within a former Gemco (the rest being a Lucky's supermarket, post-Gemco). As part of the remodel for KRU, it contained the long, oval window that Dean...

Re: Hemet CA

Wanted to chime in here as I've been very intrigued with Hemet's retail history. I'm not sure if others exist, but the former Thrifty (later Rite Aid) at the Ramona Plaza was an interesting store. I actually made it a point to visit this strip mall after I came across this old postcard (see below) a...

Re: I'm heading to this neighborhood soon

Hello,

I love seeing split screen "then and now" views of older buildings and think it would be a great project if you could take a photo of the shopping center looking in the same direction as the black and white photo shows. Let us know it goes!

Re: Albertsons Hemet, CA closing.

ieguy441 : thank you for the great history of the Albertson's shopping center. My buddy knew the owners of the Chinese restaurant inside so we took a drive to Hemet two weeks ago and were both shocked when we saw the entire store closing. I've never seen a major supermarket with empty shelves befor...
